Daily dose of Awesome

OK GO! covers the Muppet Show theme. Awesomeness ensues. This video is true to the Muppet Show style as well as paying homage to OK GO!'s amazing past videos:

A way with words

I participated in a "bibliomancy" meme on FB tonight, and the results just make me giggle.

The rules: Grab the closest book to you. Open to page 56. Copy the 5th full sentence as your FB status. Don't mention the book. Post these rules as part of your status.

The result: Surely there'd be a less dramatic, and simpler, way to arrange his disappearance.

It's from Club Dead, the third book in the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. (The books on which True Blood is based.) I'm new to the books, though I have plowed through all of them (some more than once.) They are cheesy light reading with some continuity issues, and yet they are hard to put down. Harris has a snarky wit that can sneak up on you. I can't wait for the next one.

Hell hath no fury like a texter scorned!

Alamo Drafthouse movie theater in Austin has a strictly enforced rule about talking or texting during the movie--you do it and they kick you out without a refund. One such texter left an angry (and possibly drunk) voice mail. The theater staff turned the audio + transcription into a pre-movie PSA. It's a hoot!

Ow.

My friend alienne is moving from St. Louis to Minneapolis very soon. Yesterday I helped her pack her books, and man o man does she have a lot of books! We packed and stacked something like 50 banker's boxes of books. There is still one book case full of arts & crafts books, but we ran out of boxes. My body is having flashbacks to working the book buy-back when I was an undergrad. That was definitely a workout!

Cute!

There is a group of Etsy folks calling themselves the "Etsy Plush Street Team." They hold themed competitions for original plush (i.e. stuffed toy) art. Their latest theme was Steampunk, and the results are awesome. I think my favorite is the owl under the "Steampunkers" category.

Sneak preview of Game of Thrones.

Holy crap. I'm gonna have to get cable.

Bicycle!

Edna Mode
I bought a bicycle yesterday. It's a Columbia Sport III road bike with cruiser-style handlebars but narrow road tires (1 3/8" wide). It looks a lot like the one in the picture below, except that the paint is a medium green (not quite avocado green, but in the general neighborhood.) The guy I bought it from speculated that it was from the 70s or 80s based on the type of gears it has. If he's correct, I'm assuming it's from the 70s, since any color even vaguely reminiscent of the avocado green/harvest gold colors of the 70s became uncool overnight.

Right now the bike is still in my car. It was snowing when I got home, and I haven't figured where exactly the bike will live in my apartment yet. My plans are to use it for commuting to work when the weather gets nicer and for trips to the grocery store and farmers' market (when they open in a few weeks.)

I need to get some accessories--pump, locks, etc. I need a headlight in case I want to ride at night. (MO law requires a headlight in the front, plus lights or reflectors on the rear of the bike and sides of the bike or cyclist.) I also want a rear rack, and I'm thinking of getting collapsible metal pannier baskets. The bike I had as a teenager had standard pannier baskets, and they were fantastic for carrying groceries. I like the idea of the collapsible ones since I don't have a garage for the bike. I have also been shopping for a helmet that doesn't look quite as silly as the standard bike helmets. (Seriously--they look like they were invented for alien heads.)

Anyway, here is the picture I promised a few paragraphs ago. I would post pictures of the actual bike, but the seller took down the Craigslist ad before I got home, and I don't have a camera right now.
